SIKESTON -- The championship singles match of the Sikeston Invitational Tennis Tournament had a familiar feel to it Saturday afternoon as the Lady Bulldogs' Kelsey Dial defeated teammate Martha Neel to win the championship.
Dial, seeded third, defeated Caitlin Newbrand of Fredericktown in the first round 8-0 before defeating Kennett's Mallory Lancaster 8-2 in the semifinals.
Meanwhile Neel, seeded fifth, rallied from down 5-3 to defeat Fredericktown's Myranda Shafer 8-6 in the first round before knocking off top seeded Mackenzie Carr 8-1 in the semifinals to face her teammate in the finals. Dial then won the title match 8-1 over Neel.
"I'm very proud of Kelsey Dial and Martha Neel today as they had to defeat a couple of very solid players from Kennett to end up playing each other in the finals," said Sikeston coach Russ Dial.
In doubles play, Sikeston's Geena Hooper and Emma Ferrell fell to Bryson Starkey and Hailey Holliday of Fredericktown 8-2 while Ernesha Bland and Alana Ellis lost to Darby Sparks and Kate Shetley of Kennett 8-1.
"Both of our doubles teams lost in the first round but gave good efforts," Dial said.
Sparks and Shetley won the doubles tournament defeating teammates Kelsey Washburn and Kate White 8-3.
Sikeston will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Poplar Bluff.
