Share the pride, fun of Cotton Carnival
Cotton Carnival in Sikeston is by any measure a wonderful time for our community. The annual event is right around the corner and with it comes all of the traditional highlights we have come to expect through the years - good food, beautiful queens, an awesome parade and family fun for everyone.
But perhaps even more important is the opportunity to welcome back friends and family who often time their visits to coincide with Cotton Carnival.
This time of year - with the tinge of fall in the air - is our opportunity to shine. I doubt there is virtually anyone in Sikeston who does not cherish a Cotton Carnival memory. The American Legion should stand proud each and every year for their dedication and tireless efforts to make this weeklong event so special.
The Rodeo and the Cotton Carnival in back-to-back months is a golden opportunity for Sikeston residents to put their best foot forward and place a positive spotlight on our community.
I and many others miss the Cotton Carnival in its downtown location. This is not the first time I have voiced that lament. But I also understand that growth brings changes and the current location serves our interests much better. Crowd growth and the need for ample parking make the Rodeo grounds location an improvement.
But that doesn't mean I still don't miss the downtown location, the smell of fish sandwiches in the air and the screams of the youngsters as they enjoy the carnival rides.
Let's do two things this year. Let's help monitor and police the trash that results from the parade each year. We should be as proud of the parade route following the procession as we were when it began.
And let's use this year as an opportunity to invite someone from outside this area to share in the pride and fun that defines the Cotton Carnival in Sikeston.
