SIKESTON -- The discussion on quiet zones has derailed.
Consideration of railroad quiet zone improvements was on the agenda for the special Sikeston City Council meeting Monday but will not appear there again anytime soon.
The Federal Railroad Administration provides that communities may establish a quiet zone within which trains are prohibited from blowing their whistles if special safety features are installed.
City Manager Doug Friend asked the Council to provide staff with "direction whether to proceed or stop the process" of establishing a quiet zone in Sikeston.
