CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The Sikeston junior varsity boys basketball team opened the season with an easy 61-34 win over Poplar Bluff on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the Notre Dame JV Tournament.
Sikeston opened the game on fire, leading 23-7 after one quarter and while Poplar Bluff closed the gap to 29-20 at halftime but never got any closer.
"We came out with great energy and had a really good first quarter," said Sikeston coach Brian James. "We had a little lull in the second quarter where we got to fouling a little bit and lost our rhythm for a while. We bounced back in the second half and played pretty well, especially for the first game."
Chris Word led Sikeston with 15 points while Dantrell Brown added 12.
Sikeston (1-0) took on Cape Central at 1 p.m. today in the semifinals with the finals slated for Saturday.
