SIKESTON -- A bill establishing a Downtown Sikeston Community Improvement District failed to get past a first reading.
The motion for a first reading on the bill died for lack of a second during a special City Council meeting held Monday.
If the bill had passed, the district would have had the authority to put a 1-cent sales tax proposal before qualified voters within the district.
Council tabled making a decision on the CID for 30 days at their Oct. 24 meeting and suggested property owners and merchants use that time to find something they could agree on.
A Historic Downtown Sikeston meeting was held Nov. 15 but without a consensus being found or a compromise being reached.
