Sikeston seventh grade earns victory; freshman lose debut at Notre Dame

Thursday, December 1, 2011

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston seventh grade basketball team squeaked out a win against the Cape Central Tigers on Wednesday during the first round of the seventh grade invitational tournament at the Sikeston Middle School, 45-41.

"We fell behind early, but responded really well in the second half," Sikeston coach Eric Voorhees said. "They were trapping our guys and we made some really good adjustments to pull it out. It was no doubt a tooth and nail type of game. It was back and forth, but we were able to pull it out."

Sikeston (4-0) fell behind by six points at halftime but managed to outscore Cape Central 17-9 in the third quarter, which put them up 35-33.

Sam Cox led the Bulldogs with 21 points. Phayzun Fobbs and DeShawn Aldridge each added seven points in the win.

Sikeston will take on Poplar Bluff on Friday in the championship game at 6:30 p.m.
