SIKESTON -- The first two recommendations from the Vision for Tomorrow Commission have been green-lighted.

The Sikeston City Council approved proceeding with plans to establish a leadership academy and a jobs training program during the regular City Council meeting Monday.

Jeff Posegate, chairman of the Strategic Plan Implementation Commission, said the Sikeston Leadership Academy is being modeled after leadership programs in the city of Paragould, Ark., and by the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce.

The city of Paragould "accomplished quite a turnaround" in its community thanks to its leadership academy, Posegate said.

Efforts toward establishing the Sikeston Leadership Academy have been led by a task force made up of Rick Lovall, Brian Self, Steve McPheeters and Megan Looney have, according to Posegate.

Regarding jobs training, Posegate said employers advised the Commission they have jobs available in Sikeston but have a problem keeping workers as many lack a work ethic and people skills.

Posegate said the Strategic Plan Implementation Commission will next begin looking at housing issues.
