SHS breezes through first round of Lady Royals Classic

BROSELEY -- The Sikeston Lady Bulldogs rolled in their first game of the Twin Rivers Lady Royals Classic on Saturday dispatching of the Portageville Lady Bullodgs, 67-34.

Four players reached double figures for Sikeston led by Tyangela Gibson's 14 points. Quesha Howard and Keyonna Blissett each scored 13 points each while Leah Little added 11.

Jennifer Ifland led Portageville with eight points.

Sikeston, the tournament's No. 2 seed, will play New Madrid County Central at 6 p.m. today during the quarterfinal round. Portageville drops to the consolation quarterfinals and will play Clearwater at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

NMCC 64, Clearwater 57

BROSELEY -- The New Madrid County Central Lady Eagles survived a scare from the No. 12 seed Clearwater Lady Tigers on Saturday holding them off with a 64-57 win during the first round of the Twin Rivers Lady Royals Classic.

NMCC, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, trailed by three points heading into the fourth quarter but turned it up by outscoring Clearwater 22-12.

Benesha Childress led the Lady Eagles with 23 points. Karen McGlosson chipped in with 18 points.

Clearwater freshman Lexi Morris led her team with 22 points while Hannah Rowold scored 17 points.

Twin Rivers 71, Charleston 36

BROSELEY -- The Charleston Lady Bluejays were the only team to be upset during the first round of the Twin Rivers Lady Royals Classic on Saturday as the host team dismantled the No. 7 Lady Bluejays, 71-36.

An 18-1 run to open the second quarter in favor of the Lady Royals smelled the beginning of the end for Charleston which put them in a big 37-16 hole.

Charleston's Kasuela Cooper and Eneikqua Ewing led the Lady Bluejays with six points apiece.

Charleston will play East Carter County during the consolation quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Twin Rivers will play the tournament's No. 2 seed, Kennett at 3 p.m. today.

Dexter 88, Malden 11

BROSELEY -- The top-seeded Dexter Lady Bearcats made short work of their first round opponent on Saturday as they torched the Malden Lady Wave 88-11 during the Twin Rivers Lady Royals Classic.

Dexter (7-2) played the game without two starters, sophomore Alison Jarrell with a rib injury sustained during their game against the Sikeston Bulldogs last Thursday and Katelynn Frazier for personal reasons.

Junior Brittany Harris led the Lady Bearcats with 20 points while sophomore Hannah Noe chipped in 17. Sophomores Paige Patterson and Mollie Whitehead each scored 15 as well.

The Lady Bearcats will play Doniphan in the quarterfinal round while Malden drops to the consolation bracket against Greenville.

Naylor 57, Kelly 24

BROSELEY -- The Kelly Lady Hawks had a tough time putting the ball in the rim.

Scoring just five first-half points, all in the first quarter, the Lady Hawks fell to the Naylor Lady Eagles 57-24 on Saturday during the first round of the Twin Rivers Lady Royals Classic.

Kelly will play Senath-Hornersville in the consolation bracket at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
