WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Catherine Gaty Kirschner, a resident of Washington, D.C., for 42 years, died at home in the early hours of Friday, Dec.16, 2011.

She was born in Cape Girardeau, Mo., to John and Elva Gaty in 1931, and grew up in the town of Bertrand, Mo. Catherine was a strong, creative, generous, talented homemaker, a devoted wife and loving mother with a pleasant smile and a warm heart. Active in the community, she served in the PTA, as a Girl Scout troop leader and helped create programs for youth as adult chairperson of the D.C. Mayor's Neighborhood Planning Council 2 and 3 from 1985 to 1987. She was a member of the American Psychiatric Association Auxiliary and was its president in 1997.

Catherine is loved and will be missed by her husband, Gordon Kirschner; daughters, Cynthia Swiss, Melissa Lewicki, Pamela Kirschner and Melody Snesil; grandchildren, Aleksander Lewicki, Zoe Lewicki, Dimitri Lewicki, Hannah Snesil and Jerome Snesil; and many other family members and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday Jan. 7, 2012, at Joseph Gawler's Sons, Inc., 5130 Wisconsin Ave. NW (corner of Harrison St.), Washington, D.C.
