JACKSON -- The Sikeston wrestling team finished fourth in the 12-team SEMO Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday as six Bulldogs came home with medals.
"I'd like to congratulate our guys on a great tournament," said Sikeston coach Seth Harrell. "We were 5-1 in our medal matches. Last year we lost all four of our medal matches. Historically, this has been a very competitive tournament and for us to be able to compete for a team trophy is outstanding. There are a couple matches that we feel we could have won, but sometimes things just don't go your way."
Kenton Robinson took home a conference championship in the 138-pound division for Sikeston's highest finish, defeating Clay Miller by decision 7-1. Robinson improved his season record to 38-2 with the win.
"This has been his goal since he lost last year in the finals," Harrell said of Robinson's championship. "He continues to wrestle well and has been to the finals in every tournament we have wrestled."
Clayton Driskill came home with a second place finish in the 220-pound class, dropping the championship match to Corey Gideon of North County.
"(Clayton) lost to a very good wrestler," Harrell said. "He gets better and better every week. He is very consistent in his matches whereas he does a good job of staying in good position and taking advantage of his opponents mistakes.
"We had several guys finish third. Blake Angle was in one of the toughest weight classes where the top three guys are ranked in state. A new rule change cost him a penalty point which ultimately decided his semi-finals match."
Blake Angle (120), Cody Middleton (126), Nick Nichols (182) and Austin Henson (195) all won their third place matches for the Bulldogs.
"Cody Middleton, Nick Nichols and Austin Henson all wrestled extremely well in their final matches," Harrell said. "Austin has been pretty consistent in tournaments and has finished third the last two weeks. He just finds ways to win. Cody and Nick both were really impressive this weekend. We are all proud of the way they wrestled.
"We are building momentum which is what you want to see this time of year. All of those guys only had one loss on the weekend."
Other Sikeston wrestlers just missed out on medals and wrestled well in the event. Jacob Stinnett (132) and Clay Porter (160) both finished fifth while Ben Walker (285) finished seventh.
