EAST PRAIRIE -- Raymond E. Grimes, 95, died at 10:05 p.m. Feb. 4, 2012, at his home.
Born April 8, 1916, in Ellington, to the late Samuel E. and Mary Elizabeth White Grimes, he was a Southern Baptist minister and served at the Anniston Baptist Church a number years and then at the Barnes Ridge Baptist Church for 18 years. He was employed with the East Prairie Police Department as a police officer and then as a humane officer until his retirement.
On Jan. 9, 1937, he married Lela Bell Woods who preceded him in death on Nov. 16, 2008.
He was also preceded in death by two sons, Michael Grimes and Danny Grimes, three daughters, Elizabeth Grimes, Deloris Grimes and Loretta Woods, one brother, Edward Grimes, three sisters, Lucille Weems, Virginia Cogdill and Hazel Williams, and one grandson and one great-grandson.
Surviving are: two sons, Larry Grimes and Jerry Grimes of East Prairie; one daughter, Pamela Jernigan of East Prairie; three sisters, Aline Beard of St. Louis, Thelma Allen of the state of Illinois and Earline Tinney of the state of California; and 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date near the Mississippi River.
