Workers with the Kovilic Construction Company of Chicago work Thursday to repair the bridge connecting Missouri at Birds Point with Cairo, Ill. According to a supervisor with the Illinois Department of Transportation, 27 bridge deck joints were replaced and contractors are now reworking six bearings and the bearing plates they rest on each side of the Missouri end of the bridge for the $2 million project. To work on the bearings and bearing plates, a jack able to move and support 270 tons was used to lift the bridge at each of those points. Each of the bearings reportedly weigh 150 pounds. Work is expected to be completed and the bridge opened to traffic around mid March although IDOT inspectors will have to determine if a weight limit will be needed. The bridge has been closed since January 2011.
