Longtime Riverside Regional librarian gets ready to begin new chapter with retirement

BENTON -- Bernice Kern is about to close the book on an almost 38-year career as the librarian at Riverside Regional Library in Benton.

It's the relationships that she's gained over the years that Kern, set to retire Wednesday, said she will likely miss most.

"I never got wealthy at my job, but I got rich," she said. "I have gone through three generations. The biggest reward being that every time someone had a baby, they would bring it to the library and naturally I would get to hold it. Now I look at those babies and they are grown up and I am holding their babies."
