Stormy weather: Dramatic arrival of tornado season prompts concern from safety officials

SIKESTON -- Last week's severe weather across the region proved tornado season has arrived -- and, already, it's proven to be an above-average year.

Between February and March from 1950-2011, the National Weather Service in Paducah, Ky., recorded 123 tornadoes, which is an average of about two each month during that time span, said Beverly Poole, meteorologist in charge at the Paducah office.

By comparison, just last Wednesday -- Feb. 29 -- the National Weather Service confirmed eight tornadoes for that day in Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky and Indiana.
