ORAN -- It won't be easy for the Oran Eagles to top last year's trip to the Class 1 Show-Me Showdown.
Finishing the season at 24-3, the Eagles made a final four run before falling to Liberal 6-5 in the state semifinals. Rebounding, Oran defeated St. Elizabeth 10-0 to close out the season to place third in the state.
"I feel that we have a good nucleus coming back and have the potential to win some games," Eagles' head coach Mitch Wood said. "As always, we set our sights on a state title knowing that we have to be very competitive during the season and in the Scott-Miss Conference.
"Hopefully this will prepare us for post season play when the time comes."
One notable absence this year will be Zac Chasteen, who has been one of the Eagles top three arms each of the past two seasons. Chasteen posted an 8-1 record last year and 2.0 ERA which, when combined with current junior Kody Moore's 5-2 record and 1.33 ERA and senior Dalton Elfrink's 8-0, 1.28 ERA provided for a dominant 1-2-3 punch.
The Eagles also lost all stater Tyler Heuring as well as Nolan Urhahn and Dylan Dannenmueller from last year's team.
