MATTHEWS -- A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper is recovering today following a weekend shootout along I-55 in New Madrid County that left one of four suspects dead.

The driver of the vehicle, Tonya M. Brown, 42, of Dallas; and two passengers, Jermaine K. Dennis, 24, of Mesquite; and Maurice A. Ely, 18, of Mesquite, are charged with second-degree murder, possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana with an intent to distribute.

The incident, which occurred on Interstate 55 at the 56-mile marker halfway between Sikeston and New Madrid, began about 10 p.m. Saturday when Trooper D.W. Crank stopped a red sport utility vehicle for a traffic violation of following another vehicle too closely, according to the Patrol.
