Here are some quick points of pride for our community - in no particular order.
.) The Sikeston United Way topped its goal this year and hit a record fund drive for organizations in our community.
.) The Chamber of Commerce and the city's Vision Commission have implemented a mentoring program for young workers and a Leadership Council to bring the next generation of community leaders into full gear.
.) The Sikeston Country Club has reopened with plans for an improved club under new management.
.) The Jaycees - an ongoing source of community pride - have announced the line-up for this year's Bootheel Rodeo that promises to pack the stands with some new names in country/crossover music.
.) The New Sikeston Public Safety headquarters is progressing on schedule and will change the landscape of the downtown area of our community.
.) The new Lincoln Memorial Park in the western end of Sikeston is up and running just in time for spring and summer weather.
.) The YMCA continues to expand programs and membership in what has to be one of the greatest success stories in our community's history. The Y has nearly 6,000 members in a community of 16,000 residents. Folks, that is amazing.
.) An announcement on yet another new member to Sikeston's Industrial and Technology Park could well be just around the corner. Though not guaranteed, Sikeston is one of two finalists for a substantial industry bringing jobs for our community. Keep your fingers crossed.
.) It's amazing the number of churches in Sikeston which now boast of Family Centers for their members and the community. This growth in the church community speaks well for our community.
And finally - on a suggestion from my father - let me allow you readers to decide your source of community pride. We all measure pride in different ways and each person has a source of pride as well. Maybe you can add to and improve this list. You can email your suggestions to firstname.lastname@example.org, mail them to Points of Pride, 205 S. New Madrid, Sikeston, MO 63801 or drop them off at the office.
