Daniel Gruen, Charleston's city manager, dies at age 49

CHARLESTON -- Charleston's City Manager Daniel Gruen died March 19, 2012, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was 49.

Born Sept. 14, 1962, son of Richard and JoAnn Mataya Gruen, who survive of St. Louis, he was a 1989 graduate of St. Louis University with a Masters of Arts in urban affairs and had served as St. Louis City 11th Ward alderman. In addition to serving as the city manager for the city of Charleston, he was on the board of the Charleston Chamber of Commerce. He had served as economic developer for Jefferson City, West Plains and Bowling Green and was a former member of the Army Reserves.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by: his fiancee, Debbie Pederson; one brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Carrie Gruen; and four sisters and brothers-in-law, Jennifer and Bob Tomiser, Christine and Mike Mauer, Jane and Andy Throm and Carolyn and Steve Kroeck.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of memorial services at 11 a.m. Saturday at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. The Rev. Gerald Penn, pastor of First Assembly of God Church in Charleston, will officiate.
