Sikeston netters drop match to NDHS

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The Sikeston Bulldogs tennis team fell to Notre Dame on Monday 6-3.

Brandon Goodwin won his singles match against Webb Marshall 8-1 and Layton Jones tied Mason Burdin 8-8 before pulling a 7-1 win in the extra set.

The Bulldogs other win came on the doubles side where Sikeston's No. 1 team of Josh Bill and Goodwin beat the pairing of Adam McCoy and Marshall 8-2.

"It's a tough loss," Sikeston head coach Russ Dial said. "But there were some bright spots. Our No. 1 doubles team played extremely well together and were much improved strategically from their last match together.

"Our No. 2 singles dominated his match and our No. 5, freshman Layton Jones, continues to impress coming from behind to win."

On the junior varsity side Sikeston fell 7-0.

Next up, Sikeston will host Dexter on Thursday at 4 p.m.

BASEBALL

Cape Central 6, Portageville 4

PORTAGEVILLE (SMNS) -- Ramsey Scott drilled a two-run double in the top of the 10th inning to lift Central to a 6-5 baseball victory against host Portageville on Monday.

The hit came with nobody out after Christian Cavaness and winning pitcher Luke Hinkebein opened the inning with walks.

Hinkebein pitched three innings of scoreless relief. He struck out six, walked one and allowed three hits.

Tigers starter Chase Hagerty allowed nine hits over the first seven innings, but only one of the four runs he allowed was earned.

Central improved to 1-2 with the win.

Notre Dame Invitational

CAPE GIRARDEAU (SMNS) -- Sikeston golfer Evan Deere finished in the Top 10 with a score of 78 on Monday during the Notre Dame Invitational.

As a team, Sikeston finished fifth with a total score of 324.

Dexter ended up eighth with a 379.

Kelly's Derrick Garner led the Hawks with a 90.
