EAST PRAIRIE -- This year's Tour de Corn is just over two months away but recruitment for volunteers has already begun.
Tour de Corn 2012 is set for June 23, according to Silvey Barker, coordinator for the event.
"It's a mass start -- it all begins at 7:30 a.m.," Barker said.
This will be the 11th year for the annual event.
"It was just over 100 riders the first year," Barker recalled. "When we originally started it, it was to provide a family event, to put money back into the community and to raise money for local charities. We also support national charities as well."
Over the last decade, the event has grown to be a premier nationally-known cycling event, according to organizers, with the 2011 Tour de Corn having cyclists from 15 states participating.
