Work is progressing rapidly on an expansion of the walking path at the Sikeston Sports Complex. In addition to a path going around the lake, an additional path is being created which will lead up the west side of the park to the large flag pole. According to Jiggs Moore, director of the Sikeston Parks and Recreation, when complete there will be about 1.5 miles of paved trail as well as an access walkway off of Ingram for pedestrians and bicyclists. Because of "excellent construction weather," Moore said he expected the workers with Jokerst Construction of Ste. Genevieve to complete construction before the contracted ending date of June 27. The Missouri Foundation for Health has provided grant funding of $210,421 with the city of Sikeston adding $35,000 to cover the costs of engineering, design and inspection service. Moore said the city will work with the Scott County Health Department over the next three years to provide walking programs to encourage trail use by both adults and children.
