FARMINGTON -- Sikeston freshman Gabe Wheeler led a field of 55 Wednesday to take first place during the Class 3, District 1 tournament at Crown Pointe Golf Course in Farmington.

With Wheeler leading the way, the Bulldogs finished second as a team with an overall score of 338 advancing their entire team to the sectional round of the state golf meet on May 4 at Franklin County Country Club in Washington.

Wheeler scored an 80 on the 70-par course that was stricken with windy conditions which included both rain and lightening delays throughout the day.

Only 10 golfers scored below a 90.

"The course is always tough but it's even worse with the conditions we were facing," Sikeston golf coach Andy McGill said. "I'm proud of the way they fought through the conditions and for a freshman to take first, says something."

Evan Deere, who finished sixth, carded an 85 while Connor Landers took eighth with an 86. Kirk Hoggatt shot an 87 for ninth place and Ben Murray took 17th with a 96.

With a 330, Notre Dame took first place honors. Dexter took home fifth with a 394 and qualified three golfers from their squad.

Cody Stevens led the Bearcats with a 90 for 11th place. Myles Urhahn scored a 97 for 19th place and Drake Mitchell, who finished 25th, had a 101.

The Hawks will advance to the sectional round on May 2 at Tapawingo National Golf Course in Whitfield.

"This was big for Kelly golf," Kelly golf coach Rod McQuerter said. "I'm very proud of our guys. I think it's a remarkable accomplishment for a team to advance to sectionals, especially after just two years as a program. What better way to keep your season going?"

Both Derrick Garner and Jacob Buell carded 93's which was good enough for eighth place. Josh Roberts carded an even 100 for 16th, Jacob Riley, who took 21st, finished with a 105 and Brandon Housman had a 114 for 32nd.

"Having Bootheel Golf Course for us to practice on everyday was key," McQuerter said. "Without them, we don't have anywhere to progress and get better. I'm just really thankful for them and what they do for us."
