SHS golf team finishes seventh

SPRINGFIELD -- The Sikeston golf team improved by seven strokes on the second day of the Class 3 State Championship at Rivercut Golf Club in Springfield on Tuesday, giving the Bulldogs a seventh place finish.

St. Francis Borgia won the state title, finishing with a 609, one shot better than MICDS. Sikeston's 651 gave them a seventh place finish and was the first time a Bulldog team had competed at the tournament in 10 years and was the team's best finish since 2002.

Individually, Sikeston's Ben Murray finished 34th. After finishing the first round with an 8-over par 80, Murray carded a 79 on Tuesday to end with a 159.

Teammate Kirk Hoggatt made a 10-stroke improvement on Tuesday, shooting a 76. Hoggatt finished with a 162 and was 45th.

Sikeston's Gabe Wheeler improved on his first round 82 by one stroke on Tuesday and finished in 53rd with a 163.

Four-time state qualifier Evan Deere ended a stellar career for the Bulldogs, posting an 86 on Tuesday for a two-round total of 167 for 60th place.

Dexter senior Cody Stevens shot an 83 on Tuesday and finished with a 163 for 53rd place.
