Charleston duo earns all-state honors

JEFFERSON CITY -- The Charleston Bluejays got two fifth place finishes in the first day of the Missouri Class 2 State Championships at Lincoln University in Jefferson City on Friday.

Charleston junior Sumner Foster placed fifth in the high jump with a height of 6-2 while teammate Aaron Cassell was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 20-2 1/2.

The two all-state performances give the Bluejays eight points which puts them in 10 place after the first day.

Scott City also earned all state honors with their 3,200-meter relay team. The team of Tyler Adams, Eric Essner, Luke Keesee and Brandon Shemonia finished sixth with a time of 8:25.48.

Scott City's Austin Atchley failed to qualify for the finals in the 400-meter dash, finishing the prelims in 12th with a time of 52.36.

Essner failed to qualify for the finals in the 800-meter run, finishing in 11th with a time of 2:04.41. Shemonia, who had qualified for the 800 and 3,200, did not participate in the events on Friday.

In Class 2 girls, Kelly freshman Samantha Ratledge just missed all-state honors finishing ninth in the triple jump with a leap of 32-4 1/4.

Fellow Kelly freshman Morgan LeDure finished 14th in the high jump with a jump of 4-8.

CLASS 1

In Class 1 boys, Chaffee failed to point in the 3,200-meter relay, finishing 16th with a time of 9:24.18. The Red Devils' Dustin Worley also failed to earn all-state honors, finishing 14th in the discus with a throw of 114-9.

Still Chaffee has plenty of opportunities for points on Saturday. After the preliminary heats, Chaffee is the top seeded team in the 800-meter relay. The team of Zac Dannenmueller, Tyson Estes, Travis Hall and Jordan Yahn finished the prelim at 1:33.31 to make them the favorite to win a state title in the event.

Chaffee's 400-meter relay team of Logan Chapman, Dannenmueller, Yahn and Estes, finished the prelims with a time of 44.96, making them the third seed in the event.

Chaffee's 1,600-meter relay team of Chapman, Dannenmueller, Hall and Yahn just made the finals on Saturday with an 8th place prelim time of 3:37.47.

Meanwhile Yahn is seeded second in Saturday's final of the 800 after finishing the prelims with a time of 2:01.86, winning his heat.

On the girls side in Class 1, the Chaffee 800-meter relay team of Cassie Hindman, Nadine Gerhard, Jennifer Sutterfield and Ellie Sigman qualified for the finals after sixth place prelim time of 1:51.80.

Sigman also qualified in the finals of the 200, finishing the prelims with a fifth place time of 27.00.

Oran's 400-meter relay team of Baily Carlyle, Addie Kielhofner, Aubrianna Jones and Chrissy Sauceda qualified for the finals with a third place prelim time of 52.65.

Kielhofner also qualified for the finals in the 300-meter hurdles with a fourth place prelim time of 49.50.
