JOPLIN -- Stephany Powell held on to win the Missouri Women's Golf Association's 20th Senior Women's Amateur Tournament on Tuesday at Twin Hills Country Club.
Powell held a three-shot lead when the final round began this morning and an opening bogey didn't help settle her nerves.
However, a string of pars and a birdie on number five had her at one-over par at the turn. The back nine proved more eventful, and she finished with a 77 for a two day total of 152.
Powell's closest challenger when the day began was Mary Ann Beattie, who had a tough day, finishing with an 80. Harriette Meyers of New Madrid made a charge at the lead by shooting a 74 to end with a total of 154, taking the runner up spot on the leaderboard. Ginny Orthwein of St. Louis shot a 76 to finish in third place.
New Madrid's other participant, Diane Fowler, finished with a 96 on Tuesday, giving her a two-day total of 180 for 20th place.
The Open Division first flight was won by Melanie Trimmer of St. Louis with her two day total of 172. It is customary at this championship to award the Low Net Thomas Landreth Award to the player who had the low net two day total score. This year, the award was won by Cindy Schroeder of Marshall for her low net two day total of 175.
