SIKESTON -- Alice Lee Matthews Gardner, age 82, of Sikeston, died May 22, 2012, at her daughter's home in Carrollton, Texas.
Alice was born Jan. 12, 1930, in Clarksville, Ark., along with her twin sister, Jewel Marie, to the late Flora Lee and Herbert Spencer Matthews. Mrs. Gardner was a 1948 graduate of Vanduser High School. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Sikeston. She enjoyed playing bridge, gardening and being a homemaker. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend to everyone she met.
On Dec. 30, 1948, she married Fred Lincoln Scherer who preceded her in death May 30, 1970. On Nov. 25, 1972, she married Dempsey Gardner. He preceded her in death May 8, 1997.
Mrs. Gardner was also preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert Spencer Matthews Jr. and James H. Matthews, and five sisters, Benna Lee Matthews, Clara Matthews, Lynn Dempster, Jewel Marie Sikes and Juanita Edwards.
Alice Gardner is survived by: two sons and daughters-in-law, Fred Lincoln and Christy Scherer Jr. of Bell City and Scott Stephen and Laura Scherer of Allen, Texas; two daughters and one son-in-law, Teresa Marie Thompson of Carrollton and Linda Susan and Donald Friese of Sedalia; nine grandchildren, Fred Lincoln Scherer III, Gabriel Scherer, Miya Scherer, Sam Scherer, William Scherer, Wesley Leek, Winston Thompson, Adam Friese and Peter Friese; and four great-grandchildren, Fred Lincoln Scherer IV, Sterling Scherer, Audrey Leek and Kyle Friese.
Alice is also survived by: a stepson, Buddy Gardner and his wife Connie of Sikeston; a stepdaughter, Carolyn Mirelis and her husband Victor of Stillwater, Okla.; three stepgrandchildren, Amy Gardner, Faith Brown and Cristen Brickman; and three great-stepgrandchildren, Noah Brown, Laynie Brown and Caden Brickman.
Mrs. Gardner is also survived by a very dear friend, Mrs. Margaret Rowell of Sikeston.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday May 25, 2012, at the Blanchard Funeral Chapel in Sikeston. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. May 26, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church in Sikeston with the Rev. Geoff Posegate officiating.
Burial will follow at St. Denis Cemetery in Benton.
