Unit 114 loses two, New Madrid splits with Jackson

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Sikeston Legion Unit 114 lost two games Sunday to out of state competition during a round robin tournament in Cape Girardeau.

Unit 114 lost 5-4 to Paragould, Ark., and 4-0 to Evansville, Ind.

Sikeston had six hits against Paragould led by Patrick Smith's 2 for 4 performance that included a double.

Sikeston (1-3) mustered just one hit against Evansville with JayShawn McDaniel coming through with a double.

"It was good to see some really good competition that we've never seen before," Sikeston head coach Alan Scheeter said. "They were both solid clubs.

"We played well. We didn't have very many mistakes, we hit the ball fairly well and played good, solid ball. We just couldn't come through in the win column.

Unit 114 will travel to Paducah, Ky., on Wednesday.

PORTAGEVILLE -- The New Madrid Quake senior babe ruth team split a double header with Jackson's senior babe ruth.

Jackson took the first game 8-4, while the Quake captured a 10-inning affair 14-13.

New Madrid took advantage of 16 walks given up by a mix of five Jackson pitchers.

Jackson had 17 hits in the contest. Marc Rivas and Heath Pobst each had three hits apiece for Jackson. Cory Devenport added a triple.

Jackson's Ross Moldenhauer led the way in the first game holding the Quake to three runs on four hits and four walks. He also struck out three in 4 1/3 innings.

Moldenhauer too led the team at the plate going 3 for 4 with two doubles and a single. Josh Douglas gave Jackson two hits including a double.
