Officials discuss county's airport

Friday, June 15, 2012

CHARLESTON -- The county's airport was the main topic of discussion for the Mississippi County Commission Thursday.

The commission was presented with several options for repaving the airport's runway, taxi-way and apron, according to County Commissioner Robert Jackson. Those options include: overlaying what currently exists with an understanding that it would not last as long; and repaving all of it at a higher cost, said County Commissioner Steve Jones.

"The grant's already approved (for the project)," said County Clerk Junior DeLay. However, the grant cannot exceed $500,000, but all of the proposals presented do, he said.

Mike Hutcheson, a resident of East Prairie, asked the commission about building a hangar for his two ultra-lite planes on airport grounds. "What do I need to fill out," he asked.

"You have to go by the airport layout plan," said county clerk Junior DeLay. "The original layout plan showed proposed hangar sites," he said.

Jones then pulled out a map of the Mississippi County airport and asked Hutcheson to show him where he intended to build the hangar. Hutcheson referenced the map and indicated the site. He then asked if there was any county policy in place regarding the airport's hangars.
