SIKESTON -- When 13-year-old Lee Gardner of Sikeston learned the local YMCA was doing away with the counselors-in-training for its summer day camp, he admitted he was bummed.
"But then I got the idea to ask if I could volunteer there this summer," recalled Lee, who is a former YMCA day camper.
The YMCA said yes, and Lee said it's truly worked out for the best.
"I love doing this," said Lee, who will be an eighth grader at Sikeston Junior High School this fall.
Summer day camp, which is for children entering kindergarten through the seventh grade, provides youth with the opportunity to experience a camp-like setting without being away from home.
