Grant funds help local fire departments

Friday, July 27, 2012

The Missouri Department of Conservation's matching grant program is essential to small fire departments said Dave McClarty, Lilbourn Volunteer Fire Department's fire chief. McClarty is shown with some of the most recent equipment purchased with the assistance of a grant -- firefighter gloves, a flashlight and pager. MDC recently donated a megaphone from surplus equipment to the department as well.

SIKESTON -- It's always nice whenever a fire department can receive new equipment. It's even better when that equipment is bought with the help of grant money.

This year, the Missouri Department of Conservation, in conjunction with the U.S. Forest Service, has offered matching grant funds to 180 rural fire departments throughout the state.

Two local fire departments were selected to receive such funds: the Lilbourn Volunteer Fire Department and the Charleston Department of Public Safety. The Charleston DPS will receive $2,949 and the Lilbourn VFD will receive $624 as a result of the program.
