Roping events jump-start slack at Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel rodeo

SIKESTON -- The slack portion of the 60th annual Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo kicked off Monday in both the tie-down roping and team roping events.

With just under a second separating the top three scores in tie-down roping, Cory Solomon won the night with a combined timed of 17.9 second after the two rounds. Just a fraction of a second behind, Cimarron Boardman's time of 18 seconds was good for second place while Justin Maass totaled a time of 18.8 seconds to take third.

Of the 16 competitors on the afternoon, only seven posted a time in both go rounds, including Trent Creager, whose combined time of 19.5 seconds left him in fourth place. Rounding out those who posted a time in each was Justin Macha (29.2 second) in fifth place, Ryan Thibodeaux (30.0 seconds) in sixth and Scotty Shelton (42.7 seconds in seventh.

In team roping, the duo of Travis Tryan and Jake Long took top honors on the afternoon with a combined time of 10 seconds after both rounds. Nick Sartain and Kollin VonAhn (11.7 seconds) placed second while the only other rider to post time in both rounds, Drew Horner and Justin Copp, took third with a time of 16.6 seconds. Arky Rogers and Cory Petska where the only other riders to post a time in either round, finishing in 10.3 seconds in their first round and no-time in the second to take fourth.

Slack will resume on Tuesday at 6 p.m. with the steer wrestling and barrel racing competitions.
