KEWANEE -- Betty Jean Gunther, age 87, passed away Aug, 24, 2012, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
Born Sept. 3, 1924, in Centerville, Iowa, the only child of the late Purley Rinker and Ella Stromire Peterson, she graduated from Wardell High School in 1942. Betty was an avid reader and liked to travel around the country visiting libraries to conduct family genealogy research.
On Sept. 9, 1946, at Hayti, she married her high school sweetheart, Nathan Gunther Jr., who survives of the home.
In addition to her husband, she is also survived by: one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Maggie Gunther of Dixon; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane and Herschel Schneider of East Prairie; one son-in-law, Lynn Akins of Sikeston; and five grandchildren, Brant Gunther of Commerce, Alison Gunther of Scott City, LaSondra Giardina of Rivola, Italy, Ashleigh Robison of Little Rock, Ark., and Erin Schneider of Kirkwood, Missouri.
Preceding her in death is addition to her parents was one daughter, Karen Akins.
Visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, at the Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, at the Kewanee Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Dan Wisely, pastor, will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Bernie Cemetery in Bernie.
