NEW MADRID -- The Sikeston Bulldogs seventh grade football team defeated the New Madrid County Eagles Eagles 24-8 on Thursday, coming just seconds from a shutout.
On Sikeston's first play from scrimmage, Fred Thatch put the Bulldogs in the lead for good with a 66-yard run into the end zone.
Thatch followed up the run with a successful two-point conversion to give the Bulldogs a 8-0 lead.
In the second quarter, quarterback Bryce Bays connected with Thatch on a 23-yard touchdown pass that was followed by a two-point run from Bays to put the Bulldogs up 16-0 heading into the break.
After a scoreless third quarter, Matthew Perry broke off a 14-yard run into the end zone before another two-point run by Bays sealed the game and gave Sikeston a 24-0 edge.
Preventing the shutout, NMCC got on the board with a long run from Jacob Kallemeier with 40 seconds left in the game. A successful two-point conversion made up the final.
