DEXTER -- The Dexter Bearcats saw a 7-0 halftime lead slip away late in the fourth quarter to rival Poplar Bluff on Friday night, falling 14-7.
Dexter got a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback DJ Dowdy to Trevor Waldner in the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead into halftime.
Poplar Bluff got a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kortez Ellis to Kimbrayl Miller early in the third quarter but the extra point failed and Dexter held a 7-6 lead.
A Dexter (0-2) fourth quarter drive stalled in Poplar Bluff territory and the Mules took advantage, methodically moving the ball down the field as a steady rain began to come down. Poplar Bluff (2-0) took the lead for good with 3:42 left in the game when Ellis connected with Collin Jones from 19 yards out. Miller followed with a two-point conversion run and the Mules escaped with a 14-7 win as Dexter was forced to punt on their final drive.
