NEW MADRID -- The Sikeston Lady Bulldogs finished the regular season with a 25-20, 25-23 win over New Madrid County Central Thursday at NMCC High School.
With the win, Sikeston (16-15-1) became the out-right champions of the SEMO Conference exactly a week after winning the conference tournament for the fifth year in a row -- against NMCC, for that matter.
"We knew they would be gunning for us," Sikeston volleyball coach Steve Beydler said. "The conference was determined by who won this game. It came down to the wire and I'm pleased to get the conference and come back the way we did."
The Lady Bulldogs had little problems handling NMCC during their first set win, but battled a determined Lady Eagles squad that had them down 19-14 at one point.
Sikeston bounced back with a run that eventually tied the game and took over the lead for the 25-23 win.
Trenice Greer led the team with 10 kills and also added six assists.
Lauren Beydler had a game-high 10 assists with Esther Chinwuko chipped in five kills.
Sikeston will begin the Class 4, District 1 tournament Monday at Poplar Bluff High School where they will take on Cape Central during the first round at 4 p.m.
The Lady Bulldogs are the fourth seed of the tournament. Cape Central was tagged with the fifth seed.
