POPLAR BLUFF -- The Sikeston Lady Bulldogs saw their season come to a close Monday during the semifinals of the Class 4, District 1 tournament at Poplar Bluff High School.
Sikeston, who ended the year with a 17-15-1 record, first defeated the Cape Central Lady Tigers in a three-set battle, 25-22, 25-27 and 25-16 before falling to Farmington 25-13, 25-18.
"I knew the game against Cape Central would be a tough one. They always play us close," Sikeston volleyball coach Steve Beydler said. "Our girls bared down and got it done."
After defeating Cape Central, Sikeston was on the same course as last year's district tournament where they too defeated the Lady Tigers in the first round and then met Farmington in the semis. The Knightettes made sure history repeated itself.
The Lady Bulldogs tied the first set at one point 12-12 and then the second set at 15-15, but couldn't overcome.
"We couldn't get passes to go," Beydler said. "(Farmington) put up a couple big runs towards the end, but our girls didn't give up."
Sikeston will say goodbye to two seniors -- Trenice Greer and Monica Carter.
Greer finished the night with 25 total kills in the two games as well as seven assists and three aces. Carter had 22 digs while Lauren Beydler chipped in 24 assists and four kills. Esther Chinwuko had seven kills and Sedera Williams added four blocks.
