SIKESTON -- The votes for president have been cast and counted.

The results of Tuesday's mock election at Sikeston Senior High School were a dead heat between the top two candidates.

With 186 ballots cast, 81 were for Barack Obama; 81 voted for Mitt Romney; 10 for Gary Johnson; 5 for Virgil Goode and 9 were for various write-in candidates.

"The results were really interesting," said Sarah McGill who, along with with Eric Voorhees and Doyle Noe, teaches government to juniors at Sikeston High. "I thought it interesting that the two major party candidates received 81 votes each. If that is any indication of next week's results, we're in for a close race."

Juniors and seniors at Sikeston High were all eligible to cast a ballot during their lunch hour in the cafeteria.

"They seem excited about it," said Scott County Clerk Rita Milam after the first rush of students cast their mock ballots.

"We've done mock elections at schools before," Milam said. "I think it's important for them to see how the process works. Some don't go to the polls with their parents."

And the typical response among participants in past mock elections was evident again this time as well with words such as "cool" and "awesome" being overheard by those approaching the sign-in table, she said.
