CHAFFEE -- Larry "Sarge" Dean Schlegel, 75, died Nov. 4, 2012, at the family home in Chaffee.

Born June 1, 1937, in Cape Girardeau to the late Edwin P. and Vesta R. Slinkard Schlegel, he was a machine gunner as well as a M.P. in the United States Marines for four years. Retiring as a lineman in 1988, from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Advance, where he worked for 39 years, he was a former Advance city councilman, a member of Lifetime Telephone Pioneers Communication Workers of America and the Chaffee Elks Lodge 1810. He refereed MSHAA boys and girls basketball games for many years and also worked with the Advance Little League baseball.

In 1960, he married Alice Crafton. He married Bonnie Musgrave Neal on Nov. 5, 1966 and she preceded him in death on Jan. 8, 1978. On Dec. 3, 1987, he married Elaine Schmitt Daniel, who survives on the home.

Other survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Jon Jeffry and Sally Schlegel of Atlanta, Ga.; two stepdaughters, Michelle Daniel of Cape Girardeau and Rachael Daniel of Merriam, Kan.; one brother, Charles Schlegel of Cape Girardeau; two sisters, Helen Maintz and Rebecca Illers of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee, where an Elks service is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in New Hamburg with the Rev. Michael Casteel as celebrant.

Burial will follow in St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery with full military honors presented by the Missouri Honor Guard.
