CHARLESTON -- Katherine Sutherland Nelson, 89, died Nov. 13, 2012, at Paragould, Ark.
Born Nov. 1, 1923, in Houston, Miss., to the late W.R. and Clara Soule Davis Sr., she lived most of her life in Charleston where she was secretary of the National Compress. She served as president of American Legion, was a Girl Scout leader and a member of the Charleston United Methodist Church.
On Feb. 15, 1946, in Charleston, she married Buford Sutherland who preceded her in death Jan. 25, 1987. On Nov. 29, 1991, she married Welton Nelson who preceded her in death in 2003.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Donald Ray Sutherland, a daughter-in-law, Jan Fowlkes Sutherland Palmer, one brother, W.R. Davis Jr., and one sister, Patricia Davis Carr.
She is survived by: a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Charles Harper of Paragould, Ark.; a stepson and his wife, Sonny and Jobeth Nelson of Selma, Ala.; a sister, Annette Culpepper of Kennett; and six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled from 5-7 p.m. today at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Charleston. The Rev. Dan Faust, pastor, and her grandson, Dee Harper, will officiate.
Burial will follow in the IOOF Cemetery near Charleston.
Pallbearers will be: Artie Culpepper, Bill Davis, Kent Sutherland, Richie Sutherland, Buz Sutherland, Paul Hill, Clay Dugan and Mike Finch.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of her coffee group in Charleston.
