Collecting canned foods

Thursday, November 15, 2012

The YMCA of Southeast Missouri is currently having a canned food drive to benefit the annual Sikeston Community Thanksgiving day meal offered free to residents. The following items are needed: canned green beans, canned corn, canned cranberry sauce, canned cream of chicken soup, canned sweet potatoes and instant mashed potatoes. The boxes are located at the front entrance of the YMCA for food items to be placed, as seen here where local residents and YMCA employees are donating items.

YMCA offers more than just place to exercise

SIKESTON -- There's no doubt the YMCA of Southeast Missouri offers a place for individuals to exercise, but for community members like 78-year-old Frances Barborek, it makes an even greater impact.

"It's just better than anything I've ever been a part of," the Sikeston resident said about the Y. "It's hard to put it into words exactly how important it is to me."

Barborek attends an aquatics class at the Y several times a week.

"The Y is good for more than just exercising. It's good for socializing. We have a lot of fun. ... I always go away feeling a lot better than when I got there," Barborek said.
