KENNETT -- Unable to stop a second half resurgence from the Kennett Indians on Thursday, the Sikeston eighth grade team fell 48-42.
After pulling out a four-point lead in the first quarter Sikeston was able to maintain a 24-22 lead going into the break. With Kennett outscoring them 11-6 in the third quarter, however, the Bulldogs surrendered the lead and were out-paced 15-12 in the fourth the seal the loss.
"For our first game, there's a lot of things we need to work on," eighth grade head coach Derek James said. "But, I also saw a lot of good things. We were down by 12 or 14 points in the fourth and battled back to make it a 5-point game. The kids showed a lot of heart and never gave up.
"That's something we can definitely build on."
Leading Sikeston's effort Phayzun Fobbs with 23 points while Sam Cox added 12 points to the Bulldogs' cause.
Earlier in the night, Sikeston's seventh grade squad had a little bit better luck as they jumped ahead early and held on for a 56-40 win.
In holding the Indians to only four, first quarter points, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 12-4 lead and pushed ahead by 10 points at the half.
In the third quarter, Sikeston doubled their lead by outscoring Kennett 23-13 in the frame to easily maintain a double-digit lead.
"We played great for our first game," seventh grade coach Eric Voorhees said. "Our press worked well and we got contributions for a lot of different guys tonight. I'm proud of our kids."
Fred Thatch's big 22 point night led the way and Bryce Bays contributed 10 points.
