DONIPHAN -- A slow start by the Sikeston Lady Bulldogs doomed them on the road.

Sikeston (0-2) fell to Doniphan 52-39 after falling behind by 12 in the first half.

"They had some good ball pressure put on us and we made some silly turnovers," Sikeston head coach Matt Schonhoff said about his teams start. "That led to some breaks for them and we just couldn't get into the flow of the first quarter, which was pretty much the end for us."

The Lady Bulldogs could not generate enough turnovers to allow them to stay with their full court press any longer after falling behind 11-4 after the first eight minutes.

A switch to a half court defense proved to be the right move as they upped their output to 11 points in the second by still tipping passes and coming away with steals.

"We pressed in the first quarter and wasn't really able to get much out of the press," said Schonhoff. "We maintained a regular half-court game to try and get them to throw up some shots. We got some steals, deflections and layups in transition."

The second half was fairly even with Doniphan outscoring them 25-24 during the last two quarters.

Sikeston's Aleah Little finished with a game-high 13 points on an efficient 6 of 9 shooting and also had four rebounds and two steals.

Michala Nichols had eight points and two assists while Erica Peet chipped in six points. Peet's biggest impact was felt on the glass where she hauled in 12 rebounds.

"Our kids played extremely hard," Schonhoff said. "We went to the free throw line multiple times and didn't make a lot of free throws. There's definitely some things we still need to work on."

Sikeston will be off until Dec. 3 when they will play in the first round of the Chaffee Lady Devil Invitational Tournament at Chaffee High School as the No. 5 seed.

Their first round opponent will be Scott City (fourth seed) at 6:30 p.m.
