Bluejays take care of Dexter, Risco bests Bloomfield in Campbell Invite

DEXTER -- The Charleston Bluejays easily took down the Dexter Bearcats Tuesday 70-27 at the Bearcat Event Center in Dexter.

Darrion Carter led the Bluejays with 13 points. Michael Hull added 10 and Ryan Parham scored nine.

The injury-plagued Bearcats (0-1) were led by Brad Potts, who scored 12 points.

Charleston scooted out to a 23-5 lead after the first quarter followed by a comfortable 41-16 advantage at the half.

Charleston (3-0) will not play again until the SEMO Conference Tournament which starts Monday at the Sikeston Field House.

Dexter will travel to Sikeston to take on the Bulldogs Friday.

The Charleston junior varsity also won, 47-38.

Risco 81, Bloomfield 68

CAMPBELL -- Combining a big second quarter with a sharp night at the free throw line, the third-seeded Risco Tigers defeated the sixth-seeded Bloomfield Wildcats in the first round of the Campbell Invitational Tournament.

After taking a slim one-point lead into the second frame, Risco outscored Bloomfield 25-13 in the final eight minutes of the half to pull away 42-29 into the break.

Bloomfield was able to close its deficit to 11 points to end the third before Risco won the final frame, 18-16 to secure the win.

"It was good to get that first game over with," Risco head coach Brandon Blankenship said. We shot well from the free throw line and Matt Cumins gave us 10 points in the second quarter that was a big lift for us."

Jordon Pavy led the Tigers effort with 23 points, including three 3-pointers while Josh Earnheart was second on the team with 17 points. Hunter Knight and Cumins had 13 and 10 points respectively.

As a team Risco finished the night going 26 of 36 from the free throw line.

For the Wildcats, Thomas Sanders hit four 3-pointers on his way to a team-high 15 points while Brett Rusch and Zach Goode both pitched in 13 points to Bloomfield's cause. Caleb baker was the only other player in double-digits with 11 points.

Risco will now play host Holcomb in the semifinals Thursday ay 7:30 p.m. In the toher semifinal matchup Bernie will play Twin Rivers, also on Thursday, at 6 p.m.

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston seventh and eighth grade basketball teams split during a homestand against visiting Dexter Tuesday.

The seventh grade cruised to a 64-31 victory while the eighth grade slipped in a slim 50-46 loss.

Fred Thatch led the seventh grade (3-0) with 19 points and Bryce Bays added 12.

Sikeston held a slim 27-24 lead at the half, but exploded by outscoring the Bearcats 21-2 in the third quarter.

They led 48-26 going into the final quarter.

The seventh grade will host the Seventh Grade Invitational Tournament starting tonight. Sikeston will open the tournament against Jackson at 6:30 p.m.

The eighth grade (1-2) fell in the fourth quarter after Dexter outscored the Bulldogs 19-8.

Sikeston led 38-31 after three quarters.

Phayzun Fobbs led the Bulldogs with 13 points while Sam Cox scored nine.

The eighth grade will host Poplar Bluff on Thursday.
