On Tuesday, Jevon Jones, 20, was sentenced in connection with the Nov. 10, 2010, death of Justine Wright, 22, of Hayti. Wright, who was found shot several times in his car in the 700 block of Gain Street in Charleston, later died at a local hospital.
During the sentencing, Mississippi County Prosecuting Attorney Darren Cann asked the court to sentence Jones to 30 years on the murder count, 15 on the attempted robbery and 30 years on the armed criminal action charge. He requested the sentences be consecutive for a total of 75 years.
The victim's family testified at the sentencing. Wright's mother and father, Smith Liddell and Susie Liddell, told the defendant and his family how they had prayed for him and his family through all of the court proceedings.
It was "probably the most gracious moment I've ever witnessed in my life," Cann said in a news release.
