ORAN -- Looking for a trip to the Oran Invitational championship, things didn't go as planned for the second-seeded Oran Eagles in their semifnal matchup against Advance, the tournament's third seed.
Just three days after scoring 106 points against Richland in the quarterfinals, the Eagles struggled with cold shooting all night against the Hornets before falling 71-56.
"We made a couple of runs and they did what good teams do. They answered them," Oran head coach Joe Shoemaker said. "I haven't looked at the stats, but they killed us on the boards, loose balls and little things like that.
"We put ourselves in a bad situation and couldn't battle out of it."
After a few runs in the third quarter that cut their double-digit deficit down to seven, Oran entered the final frame trailing 46-35.
The Eagles were able to close to within nine midway through the fourth, but were undone by an Advance run that pushed them ahead 63-51 with 1:52 to play.
Forced to foul, the Eagles watched the Hornets connect on 9 of 11 free throws in the final two minutes of the game to help seal the win.
"I'm a little surprised because we didn't shoot very well from the line against Kelly," Advance head coach Andrew Halford said. "We came out tonight and didn't do too bad."
Hunter Schlosser had 22 points for Oran and Lane Below had a game-high 24 points to lead the Hornets.
ADVANCE (71) -- Tyler Middleton 14, Lane Below 24, Trey Wallace 6, Curtis Gilliland 12, Ethan Barr 15. FG 24, FT 19-30, F 21. (3-pointers: Middleton 2, Below 2. Fouled out: Middleton.)
