SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Bulldogs wrestling team swept a dual meet against Dexter and Notre Dame Thursday night at the Sikeston Field House.

Sikeston defeated Notre Dame 66-6 and Dexter 51-23.

Sikeston had 11 pinfalls and won three by decision.

"I saw a lot of good effort," Sikeston wrestling coach Chris Lowe said. "I thought they were fired up and they took it upon themselves to come out and work hard."

Although there were some first match jitters, the Bulldogs hardly showed them as they breezed through Notre Dame with three pins, two decisions and six forfeits.

"It was their first match and you could see it a little bit," Lowe said about nerves. "The first match is usually that way but I thought they did okay. Notre Dame's always a big rival for Sikeston and our boys looked at it that way."

An experienced Dexter squad, who defeated Notre Dame 60-18 in the first match of the night, gave Sikeston a bit more of a challenge during the last match of the evening.

Despite Javeon Bonner, Cody Middleton and Jacob Stinnett giving Sikeston three wins right from the start, the Bearcats rattled off four wins out of the next six matches to close within seven points of the total.

Sikeston's Nick Nichols and Tarrington Marks, however, came up with back to back victories by pin fall to put a comfortable gap between them and Dexter.

"(Dexter's) a little more experienced and we had some guys step up and have a really good night," said Lowe. "We've got a lot to work on, but the outlook is good. If we keep working and doing the things we have to do we will improve. Our goal is to improve each week."

Sikeston's next meet will be Wednesday at the Field House when they host Carbondale and Cape Central at 5 p.m.
