SIKESTON -- The Sikeston 7th grade team captured first place in its own 7th grade invitational tournament with a 65-48 win over a previously undefeated Cape Central team on Friday.
Sikeston led 15-8 after one quarter and had built a 32-22 lead by halftime. They continued to extend the lead to 49-37 heading into the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs led by as much as 25 points in the final frame.
"I thought our guys played real well coming out," Sikeston coach Eric Voorhees said. "We were up 6-0 really quick. Our press worked well, but I thought our halfcourt offense was the difference in the game."
Sikeston, which improved to 5-0 on the season, was led by Fred Thatch's 25 points. Bryce Bays followed up with 11 points. Austin Branch and Dylon Mills each had nine points.
"It was thrilling for the kids to win it," Voorhees said. "The tournament's been here four years and we've had three victories for Sikeston. We didn't win it last year, so it was special to come back and be able to take that trophy home."
The Sikeston 7th grade team will play at Charleston on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
