SIKESTON -- It came down to the wire, but Sikeston notched late wins against visting Carbondale, Ill., to sweep win both their matches against the Terriers and Cape Central Wednesday night at the Sikeston Field House.
The Bulldogs went up against Carbondale first escaping with a 39-34 win during the last match.
Garrett Middleton defeated Louie Skurat to give Sikeston the 5-point win in a closely contested match throughout.
Middleton is the younger brother of Cody Middleton who set the record last season for most pins (27) in Sikeston history.
Cody Middleton, a senior also won both his matches by pin fall.
"He's always trying to compete with his big brother and in ways, that's good," Sikeston wrestling coach Chris Lowe said. "He's learning, he's starting to listen a little more and he keeps getting better every day."
When Middleton took to the mat during his 106-pound squabble, Sikeston was looking up at a slim 34-33 Carbondale lead with just one match to go.
Within the first two minutes, Middleton held Skurat down for the count.
Sikeston received another huge lift from first-time wrestler Tarrington Marks in the 220-pound weight division.
Marks, or 'Tank' as he's known, gave the Bulldogs a 33-28 lead following a tightly contested match against Carbondale's Paul Wood. The senior came away with a 7-6 victory that went down to the wire.
"Tank is really getting better," Lowe said. "He's getting more confident every day. He wrestled hard, stayed in it. He's got a lot to learn to get better, but he's got a good attitude about it."
Sikeston's Gage Barber lost his heavyweight bout to Octavious McCloud to give the Terriers their 1-point lead Middleton quickly took away at the end.
"I think we started out a little slow," Lowe said. "Carbondale came out and pushed us pretty hard and maybe some of the boys were overlooking them a little bit. But, the boys stepped up and were fortunate enough to get a win."
Sikeston scored three wins by pin fall, one by points and three more by forfeit while Carbondale won four by match score and three by pin fall.
The Bulldogs settled things with Cape Central with a bit more ease.
Racing out to a 24-0 lead after the first four matches, Sikeston breezed through the rest of the match by a final of 62-13
