Bulldogs hold their own in Tiger Classic

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Competing among 16 teams from five different states, the Sikeston Bulldogs wrestling squad more than held their own on Friday during the first day of the Tiger Classic.

"All in all, I'm very happy with the way we've done so far," Sikeston head coach Chris Lowe said as the first day of the tournament came to a close. "It's our first tournament and the level of competition had picked up a lot. I think the boys have stepped up and performed well.

"We have a couple of them coming off injuries so they've been out of the (practice) room for a week and they're a little rusty, but all in all I'm very pleased with the effort and the toughness they've shown."

Some of the highlights of the Bulldogs' first day include a dominant performance from senior Nick Nichols in the 195-pound division. After having his opponent forfeit in the first round, Nichols came out and pinned his first opponent in just 13 seconds.

Nichols capped his night with a pin of Summit's Dalton Turner in 1:29 seconds to finish the evening undefeated.

Cody Middleton is another Bulldog who finished two wins via pin as he finished 3-0 in the 126-pound division.

Jacob Stinnett (132) and Clay Porter(170) were another pair of Sikeston wrestlers to leave Friday with a 3-0 record.

"It's only going to get tougher as the tournament goes and that's what we're wanting," Lowe said. "That's how we're going to get better, by wrestling the tough opponents."

The elimination portion of the Tiger Classic continued Saturday.
