Hearnes Elementary reaps benefits of rewards program

Tony Chen, a fourth grader at Hearnes Elementary School in Charleston, shops in the Brock Buck Store. Students earn "Brock bucks." Students in grades K-5 have opportunities throughout each quarter to earn incentive points, called "Brock bucks" (named after principal Tammy Brock). These bucks are rewarded for good attendance, behavior, citizenship and honor roll as well as a buck for every point earned in the Accelerated Reading program.

CHARLESTON -- Students at Hearnes Elementary in Charleston are being rewarded for their good behavior with quarterly shopping trips to the "Brock Buck Store."

Named after Hearnes Principal Tammy Brock, the Brock Buck Store is designed to promote positive behavior and actions among students.

Brock said she came up with the idea for an incentive store to motivate children to behave well when she was working on her final project for her master's program a few years ago.
